His research centers on Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition, and Embedded Systems. His primary interests include image and Document recognition, biometric identification, intelligent health monitoring systems, and the modernization of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

As a Principal Investigator (PI), he has led key national research projects, including those funded by the National High-tech R&D Program (863 Program) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). He is a three-time recipient of the State Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Class: 1999, 2004, 2008) and has received eight provincial and ministerial-level science and technology awards. He has published over 150 academic papers and holds more than 40 granted patents. In 2008, he was selected for the Ministry of Education's "Program for New Century Excellent Talents."

His research is strongly oriented towards practical applications, and he has an exceptional track record in technology transfer. Since 1998, he has spearheaded the development of influential systems such as the Tsinghua TH-OCR, Wintone/Unisplendour handwriting recognition, VAT invoice recognition, license plate recognition, and multi-spectral banknote authentication. These technologies have all achieved widespread industrial application and have been licensed to a number of world-leading companies, including Microsoft, HP, Xerox, Nokia, Siemens, Samsung, Huawei, Tencent, Baidu, and Alibaba Cloud.
