Xien Liu is an Assistant Researcher in the Department of Electronic Engineering at Tsinghua University. He received his Ph.D. in Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2021 and subsequently held the Zhang Keqian Named Postdoctoral Fellowship in the same department from 2021 to 2024.
He serves as an Executive Committee Member of the CIPS Special Interest Group on Healthcare and Bio-Information Processing, a member of the CIPS Committee on Large Models and Generative Intelligence, a Youth Committee Member of the CAAI Special Committee on Social Computing, a Member of the Hospital Pharmacy Technology Committee, and a Senior Member of CCF (China Computer Federation). He was honored with the 2022 CAAI Rising Star Award in Social Computing. Currently working at the Biomedical Engineering Innovation Platform within the Department of Electronic Engineering at Tsinghua, his research focuses on medical natural language processing, domain-specific large language models in healthcare, clinical decision support, AI-driven medical record quality assurance, smart medical insurance, and the governance and utilization of medical big data.
Key Research Contributions:
1. Smart Healthcare:
Dr. Liu led the development of Med3R, the first deep learning–based medical AI system to successfully pass the National Medical Licensing Examination (NMLE) in China. Specifically, in 2017, Med3R took the two-day, four-session written examination of the NMLE under strict supervision and in an isolated, offline environment administered by the National Medical Examination Center. The process was monitored and certified by official proctors and notaries, and the system achieved an impressive score of 456, outperforming 96.3% of human examinees in that year. This achievement was published as a full-length article in Nature Communications, and the system has since been widely applied in China's primary healthcare settings, significantly improving the quality and standardization of clinical diagnosis and treatment.
2 Smart Medical Insurance:
Dr. Liu developed the first AI auditing engine tailored for DRG/DIP-based payment systems, built upon a full-medical-record content analysis framework. This system, known as the “Medical Insurance Auditing System Based on Comprehensive EMR Analysis,” significantly enhances the efficiency and accuracy of medical insurance review processes. It won First Prize in the 2022 Smart Medical Insurance Solution Competition organized by the National Healthcare Security Administration (NHSA) of China. The system has since been piloted and fully implemented in over ten cities across the country, demonstrating a 3–5x improvement in effectiveness compared to traditional review methods. It has received multiple official letters of appreciation from departments within the NHSA.
Other Achievements:
In 2021, Dr. Liu’s team won first place in the global “Automatic Diagnosis Dialogue System Challenge” organized by ICLR. He has authored or co-authored over 30 academic papers in top journals and conferences such as Nature Communications, npj Digital Medicine, IEEE/ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech, and Language Processing (TASLP), ICLR, ICML, ACL, AAAI, and IJCAI. He holds more than 20 invention patents, has participated in multiple national and municipal-level research projects, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the Beijing Natural Science Foundation, and has led or co-led six major commissioned projects funded by the National Healthcare Security Administration.
